Published out of Toronto, THE BODY POLITIC was one of Canada’s pioneering and most important gay publications during its run from 1971 to 1987, and is credited for its role in the development of the LGBT community in Canada.
A central, activist medium of the Gay Liberation Movement, it offered political, social and cultural commentary, and the evolution of gay rights in the world. This issue 19 from the summer of 1975 features a long piece about the condition of gays and lesbians in Cuba, plus a foldout poster celebrating the National Gay Rights Conference in Ottawa.
While the newspaper’s name is indisputably great, we can’t help to feel a little sad its founders didn’t go with another option they had in mind: RADICAL PERVERT.
