How do you recognize a really good down jacket?

Start with what is inside.

The quality of the down makes the difference: its ability to expand, trap air and help retain your body’s warmth without weighing you down. That ability has a name: fill power, measured in cuin.

Cuin stands for cubic inches Under standardised testing conditions, fill power measures the volume occupied by one ounce of down, approximately 28.35 grams.

At 850 fill power, one ounce of our down occupies 850 cubic inches. The more space the down fills for its weight, the more insulating air it can trap. A higher number means greater loft and more efficient insulation, not a simple temperature rating. The warmth of the finished jacket also depends on how much down it contains and how it is constructed.

The MR FREEZE DOWN JACKET uses 850-fill-power French duck down supplied by Kawada in Japan.A high-performance grade chosen for its exceptional loft, lightness and compressibility.

At Kawada, the down is washed in spring water, then carefully sorted and processed in Japan. That attention to the filling carries through to the finished garment: The entire jacket is made in Japan.

And before we go any further: a word of thanks to the ducks and geese. KAMO KAMO was also our dedication to them, our best friends in this project. They know considerably more about insulation than we do.

WORDS, SOUNDS, COLORS & SHAPES introduces the MR FREEZE DOWN JACKET by DIE DREI BERGE, the successor to our bestselling KAMO KAMO.

The new model has a longer body for greater coverage, with a generous A-line silhouette and an internal waist drawcord that allows its shape to be adjusted. A lightweight polyester taffeta shell gives the down room to reach its full loft while keeping the garment light. A water-repellent finish provides additional protection against light rain and snow.

The fabric’s subtle sheen and contrasting lining recall the outdoor clothing of the 1990s. Four colour combinations bring that spirit into the present:

Generously down-filled pockets have side-entry openings to keep hands warm. Wholegarment-knit ribbed cuffs incorporate thumbholes for added coverage. Inside, a specially illustrated patch pays tribute to Kawada. Gold-tone duck-motif snap buttons give our feathered collaborators their rightful place on the outside, too.

Ramdane Touhami drew inspiration from the American “Kara Koram” expedition parka of 1953 and the Italian* “Karakorum” jacket associated with the 1954 K2 expedition.

The bold square quilting, drawcords and ribbed cuffs reference the American design. The lightweight fabric and double-breasted front, with two rows of snap buttons, draw on the Italian jacket.

These elements have been reworked through a longer silhouette, adjustable volume and carefully considered details, bringing the practicality of expedition clothing into everyday use.
